Have you ever purchased shade after shade of red lipstick only to have them just sit in your makeup bag collecting lent? If you are anything like us, there is a bit of anxiety involved when wearing bold shades. Our fear was that we would end up looking just like the joker or worse.
This is why we are cracking the code on how to find your perfect shade of red. There are so many shades of red lipstick to choose from however, we are going to break them down into three main categories. You have your cool shades which consist of pink based reds and also blue based reds. Then you have your warm shades which consists of orange based reds and also yellows. Your undertone could also be neutral which means that you can wear both warm and cool shades. This sounds a little scientific we know but, many people don't realize that the undertone of your skin could help in a huge way when determining which shade of red lipstick will work best for you. Let's break this down a little more.
Just because you have fair skin doesn't mean you can't have warm, cool, or neutral undertones. Celebrities such as Nicole Kidman (cool undertone) and Emma Stone (neutral undertone) both have fair skin tones but, very different undertones. Colors that often compliment a fair skin tone are cool reds, pinks, and mauve. There is an old tried and true beautiful red lipstick that we think would look absolutely insane on fair skinned beauties. Olive skin is also simply gorgeous and can come in a shade range of individuals who may have a light complexion to some darker complexions. A few famous faces who share an olive skin tone include Kim Kardashian and Demi Lovato to name a few. Rich hues such as brown, burgundy, and wine look stunning for warm undertones. For cool undertones, soft pinks and mauve shades work great with your skin. By now, you're probably wondering how do I know what my skin's undertone is? Here are a few tips that will help in determining your undertone:
1. The Vein Check - Take a look at the veins on your wrists. If your veins are on the blue side, this means that you have cool undertones to your skin. On the other hand, (no pun intended) you have a warm undertone if your veins are more on the green side.
2. The Jewelry Test - If gold jewelry compliments your skin, this means that you most likely have warm undertones. If silver stands out more against your skin, this means you have cool undertones.
