3 Things You MUST Know About Expired Beauty Products

Ever took a look at that old tube of mascara and wondered why it doesn't apply the same as when you first purchased it? You may want to check that expiration date sis. Just as with food and other products makeup also has an expiration date as well.

Speaking from experience, I was unaware that beauty products had an expiration date for years. When I found this out, it was a little depressing because most products only have a shelf life of 6 months to one year after opening.

On one hand, I'm one of those girls who doesn't like to throw products away especially if I have more left to use and if the packaging is really cute. On the other hand, continuing to use expired beauty products can be very bad for your skin and even your health.

In this post, we'll discuss 3 things you probably don't want to hear about expired beauty products.

Finding The Date

Yes, all good things do come to an end. Almost all makeup and beauty products will have a small symbol/icon that will be located somewhere on the packaging containing the number of months or years that you have to use the product after opening.

The expiration date may not be the same on every product and is likely due to various factors such as what the products are made of and their usage. If you find this date approaching on any of your beauty products, it's definitely safe to say that they will need to exit stage left into your nearest trash bin.

Skin Irritation

If you're anything like me....you may not want to hear this part. Using those expired products well passed their expiration date can definitely cause irritation in your skin such as swelling and acne breakouts. I once took a look in my makeup bag and felt what I thought was a sigh of relief that I still had a lot of my Glam Glow face mask left over that I brought four years ago.

Thinking that I could still use it and not have to repurchase it made me feel that it was worth holding onto however, the expiration date states that this product is good for 3 years after opening. It was so hard to say goodbye but I knew that the safest thing to do in this case was to toss it out. Please don't continue use of any products on your skin if the product is well past it's shelf life.

Product Application

Sorry..... but that new eye makeup you recently purchased just wont apply the same as it nears the end of its shelf life. Many eyeliners, eyeshadows, and blushes will dry out over time. Foundations, concealers, primers. and lipsticks are definitely items you shouldn't hold onto. Their liquid or creamy consistencies can be a major breading grown for germs

As the product ages, it's ingredients tend to breakdown and wont provide the same coverage as it once had. That's something you definitely don't want on your face, eyes, or lips causing bacteria.

Conclusion

As much as we spend on our most beloved beauty products, no one wants to feel as though their money is going to waste. If you're reading this, you may be just like the vast majority of us whose makeup bags and cases are filled with so many beauty products that we just couldn't live without and have hoarded throughout the years.

The good news is that most brands are offering more vegan and non toxic options for makeup however, those products still have shelf lives as well. I admit that I hated finding out this information but, it just gives me an excuse to throw out the old and try some new things.

Nothing lasts forever. If you're ever in doubt whether your beauty products may be expired, just go ahead and toss them. It's always better to be safe than sorry.
