How to Build your Makeup Collection
Some people may think that you have to have all the essentials that every influencer raves about in their makeup kit right then and there. If your goal is to be a makeup artist, you should be abreast on all the makeup trends and products to give your consumer the best. Building an established makeup kit for business purposes takes time and money. However, for the average person, building a proper kit can be like building a wardrobe; you only need the essentials to create magic.
To start off, my first advice would be to do some research. By research I mean, discover what type of skin you have. For example: do you have oily skin, dry skin, or combination?! This helps you because you know what type of products to get when we start talking about the face such as foundations and primers.
You also want to look into good, quality brushes and sponges. Starting off, you do not have to spend thousands of dollars on brushes but you do not want to be cheap either.
With that being said, lets get into the essentials. First up:
Mascara
A good mascara will lift and separate your natural eyelashes creating a full look and making your eyes look brighter/wider. If you are a lash girl (like me), it also helps to blend your real lashes into your falsies giving it a more natural look. On of my favorite mascaras is by L'oreal Paris with their Voluminous Lash Paradise' .This has also been compared to or dubbed a dupe to Too Faced's 'Better Than Sex'. Both are amazing products that help your natural lash look like falsies by making them appear full, long, defined and dark. Mascara can be used for a full face or just for everyday wear. A good mascara goes a long way.
Eyeliner
A good eyeliner can go a long way. I am a fan of liquid eyeliner myself but there are some that work just as good as a liquid. The best starter eyeliner would be one that is waterproof. Stila's 'Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner' is one of the best you can have in your collection. It has a thin tip that helps you to create clean precision or dramatic lines. It doesn't dry out as quickly as other liners as well. Kat Von D has an O-MAZ-ING liner that is beginner friendly. The Vegan Tattoo Liner is flexible, waterproof, and best of all vegan. The liners with precision tips are best for the perfect winged liner.
Foundation
So remember what we stated in the beginning about knowing your skin type? This piece of information will help you to pick out the right formula of foundation that is best for your skin type. Choosing the correct foundation is one of the bases of building the perfect kit.
For Oily Skin: A foundation with a water-based formula or powder foundations are great for oily. Lancome Paris 'Teint Idole Ultra Wear' is one foundation that is water-based and gives medium coverage that is buildable. MAC's Studio Fix Powder is also a great press powder that helps the skin stay breathable.
For Combination Skin: Liquid or stick foundations are great for this skin type. You may even want to mix and match foundations to the dry parts hydrated and reduce the oil on the oily parts of your skin. Estee Lauder 'Double Wear Stay in Place' for combination skin. Its buildable and dries down matte.
For Dry Skin: Your best friend will always be hydrating foundations. Silicone based foundations and water-based foundations keep the skin looking dewy and moisturized. An example of a hydrating foundation is NARS Sheer Glow which is sheer and offers a natural finish.
Some of these same rules apply when looking into primers. In case you are unaware of what a primer is, here is a quick synopsis: a primer is a product that is applied to the skin to prep the skin for your makeup and also keep everything in place after application.
Now for the fun part that we all have been waiting for:
Eyeshadow
There are so many palettes that I could choose from. So many that deserve honorable mention. However, when it comes to eyeshadows, choosing one that is highly pigmented and has at least the primary colors (if you are lucky, the secondary ones too!). One of my FAVORITE palettes that I love is the Morphe x James Charles palette. It has all the colors you need to mix, match, and make magic.
Lipstick/Gloss
Now if you have nothing else in your kit, you should at least have your favorite lipstick or lipgloss. At one point, the liquid lipsticks were all the rave so its nice to see gloss is creeping its way back to our hearts. Although, liquid lipsticks are still neck and neck with gloss due to the pandemic. (Who wants a sticky mask?!!!)
With lipstick, there are no rules. You choose what feels good on your lips. If you need help with finding the right shades, check out one of our posts regarding finding the perfect lipsticks: 6 Poppin' Lipstick Shades or Finding the Perfect Red Lip .
Honorable mentions:
Blush Lip Liners
Concealer Bronzers/Contour Kits
Highlighters Lashes
Is there anything you feel we should've covered?! I think we covered the basics. Leave a comment and let us know whats in your makeup kit. Maybe your information will help someone build the perfect kit.
