Makeup Versus Presents: Liquid vs Powder Foundations

An age old question with a complex response. Through the years both have definitely had their hits and misses. Brand options are plentiful as are the many shade ranges and coverage capabilities of both. Taking those things into account while also trying to subscribe to which team of foundations you prefer can make for a mini meltdown while shopping in Sephora. 😨

Rather than have that happen, we've decided to help our beauties out with a little versus battle of our own. Are you #teamliqiudfoundation? Or #teampowderfoundation? Keep reading to see if you're solid on your preference or if you could be swayed to another side.

Team Liquid Foundation

The process of choosing a liquid foundation is the same as with choosing any powder foundation. The first thing that you must know is how to choose the right shade that will match seamlessly with your skin tone.

Matching your foundation can be achieved in a few different ways. Firstly, you can start off by asking any of the pros that work at your favorite makeup up spot for a little help with determining which shade will be the best fit for you.

If you would like to take matters into your own hands, you can also try "good olé fashioned" swatching by placing a tiny bit of a tester shade on your wrist or neck to see what would be a good match.

Thirdly, brands are now going high tech. Ulta Beauty has a really cool shade matching tool for foundation that they have included on their website. Check it out....click here

Team Powder Foundation

Ok, so who wants to look casket ready sis? Looking a bit too cakey is a common mistake that can be made if you pack on the powder. Choosing the best finish for you will depend on if you feel you'll need full coverage or a more sheer finish.

Full coverage foundations are great for covering up blemishes, dark spots and dark circles. While a more sheer powder foundation can be used for those gorgeous "makeup no makeup" days. Or if you just need to touch up a bit while you're out.

Powders can also come in two forms which are pressed and loose. We definitely prefer pressed powders because even though there can be some fallout, there is still a little less of a mess upon application.

Just as with liquid foundations, powder foundations also come in an array of shades and are widely sold by a variety of brands.

Pros and Cons

Ding....Ding....Ding!!! The gloves are on. Let's explore the pros and cons of both liquid and powder foundations.

Liquid Foundation Pros

The most obvious pro for a liquid foundation is the fact that its smooth texture makes it easy to blend in with your skin. Liquid foundation is very buildable and easy to mix and match. Just in case you need to wear a few different shades together in order to match with your skin tone.

Liquid Foundation Cons

Liquid foundations can be bad for oily skin. Many brands have created matte pressed or whipped foundations but as someone with oily skin, we have found that some of those foundations still cant withstand those hot summer days or tragic office lights. With that being the case, you have to make sure to have a good skin routine on deck in order to keep those pores unclogged.

Powder Foundation Pros

Powder foundations can absorb the moisture on your face just by doing a few touch ups to bring a nice matte look to your skin. When applied correctly, powders can also be buildable and give you a nice airbrushed and polished look. You can also use powder foundation to seal in your concealer and also as an eyeshadow base.

Powder Foundation Cons

As we've stated above, a little bit goes a long way. You want to have an even application with any foundation that you use but due to the fact that this type of foundation absorbs the oil in your skin, applying too much will leave your skin looking dry.

If you suffer from dry skin, you may want to lean towards using a liquid foundation or lightly apply your powder foundations.

Conclusion

We guess we'll have to call this a tie based upon the fact that this battle can only be resolved as a matter of personal preference. There are pros and cons of both and we feel that it all comes down to choosing what works best for your skin type.

One thing is for sure, if you combine both you'll have an absolutely flawless look. So, go ahead and apply your liquid foundation and set it with a light dab of powder. 😉
