Redesigning Beauty Norms: Embracing Diversity within the Beauty Sector

The beauty industry has faced criticism for endorsing limited beauty norms that marginalize numerous individuals. Throughout the years, there have been many notable trailblazers advocating for increased representation of beautiful women of color on magazine covers, beauty campaigns, and television.

Yet, it has only been in recent years that we've witnessed a significant shift towards inclusivity, with women of various shapes, sizes, and skin tones taking center stage to lead the industry, showcasing their talent, beauty, charisma, and elegance.

We believe that for the beauty industry to embrace diversity further, there is still much more work to be done. However, here are some aspects we believe should be continued:

Showcase a Diverse Range of Beauty Standards

By presenting a variety of beauty standards, the beauty industry can appeal to a wider audience, ensuring everyone feels represented. Showcasing diverse cultural beauty standards, different skin tones, and various body and facial shapes communicates that beauty is not confined to one norm.

It's so important for us as consumers to understand that we shouldn't strive for unrealistic beauty ideals. The absence of diverse beauty representations has led many women to resort to harmful products, injections, and cosmetic surgery to conform to a standardized beauty concept promoted by the industry.

Embracing our unique qualities as sources of beauty and debunking the notion of a singular beauty standard is essential.

Brands Diversifying Their Product Ranges

Different shades of foundation powder makeup

There have been ongoing issues for years with brands continuing to be "tone" deaf to the needs of every woman. It wasn't that long ago that women of color struggled to find foundation shades that matched our skin tones and suitable hair products. The good news is that many brands have begun to step up by offering products with the hopes of catering to various diverse consumers.

Fenty Beauty, for example, revolutionized the makeup and beauty industry by offering a wide range of foundation shades. Natural hair care products are now more accessible in big-name stores and online.

It's truly inspiring to witness some progress, but there is still room for improvement. If brands continue on the track of diversifying their products and brand messaging to cater to all skin tones, hair textures, and body types, every queen can feel beautiful.

Delivering Impactful Campaigns and Messages that Showcase Diversity

It's so important that brand campaigns and messaging feature models and influencers from diverse ethnicities, sizes, ages, and gender identities. It's also essential for brands to have more inclusive representation and maintain positive messaging in advertising and promotion efforts.

We must admit, it's such a vibe to see models and influencers who look like us rocking our go-to beauty picks, making shopping for our perfect shade or that holy grail product a breeze.

We're also all about those self-love campaigns that promote acceptance and well-being alongside fabulous products. We must keep this going so that future generations continue to see themselves represented.

Conclusion

Self-love and confidence can grow when beauty standards are redefined. Celebrating diversity in skin tones, body shapes, ages, genders, and abilities is crucial. Encouraging brands to prioritize authenticity over perfection in marketing is also essential.

As bloggers, our goal is to create content that resonates with everyone, helping our readers to feel acknowledged and empowered.
